Cultivating resilience for mental wellbeing

COVID changed our world in a myriad of ways. It brought with it an immense amount of pressure on our mental wellbeing. Several studies show a significant rise in mental health crisis since the pandemic and many are still grappling from its impact such as dire health challenges, burnout, death of family members and friends, hopelessness, confusion, loss of jobs and home as a result. None of us is exempt or immune from adversity, pain or trauma. It happens to us all directly or indirectly. Hence the need to cultivate resilience as a strategy for mental support. Resilience is the capacity to rebound from or adapt easily from adversity or change. It’s an essential tool in successfully navigating a world as unstable as the one we live in. To cultivate resilience and remain in a constant state of wellness, one need to deliberately rehearse/practice healthy habits such as:

  • Staying hopeful and optimistic
  • Maximizing available resources/support
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Practicing relaxation
